Is Solar Power In Your Future?

Man installing a Solar-shingled roof.Advantages And Disadvantages Of Solar Power

Most people like the concept of using energy from the sun.  After all, it's free, right?  Many people also like the peace mind that comes from being independent of the local power company.  And you're helping to save the environment, too!  Sounds like a winning idea, right?

Unfortunately, the reality is that the installation costs are high - often ranging from $20,000 to $60,000 to power an entire home.  Many people will still choose solar power, however, if they are planning to stay in their home long enough to recover the cost - up to 10 years or so.

Financial Incentives

To help out, the federal government, and many states, will provide funding for solar power projects in the form of rebate programs, tax credits, deductions, loans, and grants.  One of the best resources to learn more about incentives for home solar power and other alternative technologies is The Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency.

Make Money From Your Home Solar Energy System?

It's true - you can sell electricity power to your local power company. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 requires all public utilities to offer this to any customer upon request, although their is a cost to connect, and they may only pay you for a portion of the electricity you generate.

The high installation costs have not stopped some people.  Building a solar energy system is not that difficult, depending on the type of system, size, etc.  Many people build their own solar project to save money,  but some do it as a hobby, while others are motivated by the idea of becoming self-reliant and/or have a desire to conserve natural resources.

Start Out Small

There's plenty you can do without trying to convert your whole house to solar power.  You can power your outdoor lights, or maybe a shed or workshop.  You can build a hybrid system that will supplement energy from the gas or electric company to heat your home or power certain appliances.

This website is devoted to those of you who have a desire to use solar energy in some way to benefit yourself and your family.  Please let us know how we can improve it.
